A Half Ton Dream

I recently watched the movie Country Strong. Have you seen it? I can't say it's on my favourite list, it was only a little more than okay, but it did have one or two things going for it.

The movie is set among the back drop of a country singer's music tour and there were plenty of shots of the tour bus and it's entourage as they traveled rural roads chocked full of gratuitous images of farms and barns. And tell me, who doesn't love a good barn around here? And there were some catchy songs too, but I knew within the first five minutes I'd be watching this movie til the end when I saw this:

No, not the guy, although come to think of it that might have been a plus too but to maintain my integrity round these parts I'll have to plead the fifth on that one. Wait, can I do that if I'm Canadian? So, I suppose your wondering, if it's not the guy then, just what am I talking about?  I'm talking about the truck. The old, beat up pick up truck. Now that, my friends, is a beauty. For the last year or so, I've oohed and aahed every time a pick up with a certain patina passes me by.

And while I gaze longingly at beautifully and lovingly restored vintage models, what this girl would really like is a beat up old pick up. No fancy convertible, no sleek and classy sedan, and definitely not another SUV. No-sirree-Bob's-your-uncle. A hard working beauty, with all the scars to prove it, is what I'm after.
One that will take me and my dog to the feed store, ferry our rare breed chickens back and forth to poultry shows and take us to the library for more books and maybe once in a while check out the DVD of Country Strong so we can admire that pretty blue Ford all over again.

And maybe, just maybe, head to the hills of Tennessee.

~So do tell friends, what's your dream on wheels?~

I have CRAZY CRAZY love for vintage trucks. If they weren't gas guzzlers, I'd have me a whole bunch by now. Yee haw! For real :) XOL

I'm with you on this one. Love me a good old road hard, put up wet, pick 'em up truck.

Girl, I'm right there with ya! I've been wanting an old truck for a long time now. My kids just don't understand it. They are out looking at brand new ones and I want the ones they want to trade in!

there are three of these for sale right up the road from us! the cowboys sold out and headed to Monatana. I'm looking for a VW bus...an old one. Going to have to find it in somone's back yard though...I can't believe what they want for them on e-bay! If you go to Tenn...I am coming with!

yup, i'm totally with the first commenter - if it weren't for the gas guzzling, oil spewing issues, i'd love an old worn pickup.

my 'dream' car is a 1970 Chevelle SS, but my 'sexy' vehicle is a flatbed ford - just like in the song. when i see 'em, something just melts inside me! :)

I love the old trucks with the roundy fenders. The old 40's farm trucks. Sigh. SO beautiful. Whenever I see one (which is rare), my heart skips a beat. I'd love to own one, but I'd never drive it--I couldn't afford the gas!

I love the old trucks but a 55 chevy kills me.

Ah yes, great minds do think alike. The truck was the best part of the movie. I said (shrieked) to Mr. W "yard truck!!!" when I first saw the beauty :) This particular behavior is fairly common for me - especially during our country drives. One can dream, right? -Tammy

Good Morning Andrea!
Oh ya...I only watched a bit of that movie and I remember that truck. My ex and I had an old late 50's light blue and white Ford truck when we first got married :) I can't believe that we drove all the way from BC to Manitoba and back with our 3 year old son with NO seat belts! I'd love to have an old truck again..don't care what make it is as long as it's old and runs. We have part of an oldie here on the farm that I'd like to put together (no guts just the bed and front end) and have hubby move it to where we can see it and fill the bed with dirt and I'll plant something in it. Anyway...great post and photo's! Enjoy your day..

I haven't seen the movie, but I'm loving your obsession with old trucks! Right now I can't seem to get over my obsession with my minivan, but I gotta bloom where I'm planted right? :o)
And might you be going to visit a certain someone in those Tennessee mountains???? Now that would be awesome! I wanna see pics of you with Annie!

I love old trucks too, and find myself listening to 'Give In to Me' by Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund over and over again. Our 14 year old saves up all his money and has been scouring kijiji and ads for a 1980 era pick up. He wants to buy it now and fix it up (and stare longingly at it for oh, 2 or 3 more years) and mom keeps gently reminding him to keep saving and wait until you are older. I guess the old pick up love is genetic around here too.

If I had the money I would buy that truck for you! Then you could drive that beauty to Tn. to christen it! And Annie would share her stall with you...only if you wear matching p.j.'s!

LYLAS!

I understand completely. I love those old trucks. They remind me of my grandfather's truck that he drove back in the 70s. But his had curtains in the back window. It was all the rage at the time!

Too funny! I'm going to have show you a picture of my husband's baby... a 1972 Chevy. It's the one thing I know he'll never part with.

He had it when we met way back in high school... since then that pick up has had every single thing replaced right down to the dashboard inset thing. It's pale yellow and white.. doesn't get out much anymore but everytime I get inside it sure does bring back memories.

It's hard to believe that it will be 40 years old next year!

PS and yes, I think you can plead the fifth... at least to us folks south of the border ;)
