Dipped in Frost

I woke up Sunday morning to skies of grey, but before I could dismiss the weatherman's misappropriated forecast, the sun popped up over the trees in the east to reveal blue skies striped with white, but that's not all. Jack Frost had made his rounds and left a variety of patterns for all to see, none more pretty than the hoar frost deposited along the tree tops. It seemed that, like a fountain pen that has been dipped into a well of ink, these trees had too been dipped, into Jack's arsenal of frost. Havoc he may create, with Mother Nature's creations, but a work of art nonetheless.

What is hoar frost? White ice crystals loosely deposited onto exposed objects chilled below zero, on cold clear nights when heat escapes into the open sky above or, more simply put, frozen dew that turns white. I prefer to think of it as part of Jack Frost's bag of tricks, giving us a bit of magic with which to start our day.

  2. You painted a beautiful picture with your words and the photos were the icing on a cake only Mother Nature can create.

Our hoar frost develops differently here. It seems the items that retain moisture expand and freeze dry making interesting shapes and patterns. Either way, beautiful.
