Father Goose

The Artist and I went out for a short walk tonight. And by short, I mean to say, shorter than last night. My feet had not recovered from last night. In fact, they revolted all day but I went for a walk again anyways. The sun was shining and I like getting my Vitamin D the old fashioned way.

During the final leg of our walk, we passed a pond where we had noticed, during our first spring in the country, a pair of geese nesting. Each night on our way home, I would slow down while the twins and I peered out the car window to see if Mother Goose was on her nest. We always love to watch them as they nest, with the hopes of catching a glimpse of newborn goslings and the little bit of city girl left in me still secretly hopes a pair will nest on our pond but the chances of that happening diminish each year. Thanks to the Artist and his pond patrol tactics. Although as a follow up to the goose post two years ago, his hopes for a dog to assist him his endeavours were abruptly shattered today. He came home at lunch to discover Callie in the pond with four geese. She's filthy, she stinks to high heaven and she fraternizes with the 'enemy'. Her momma is proud!

So as we passed by that spot tonight, I went back to see if there was a nest and sure enough this lovely lady was on duty. She didn't flinch as I drew nearer. I just wanted to take her portrait but at the last minute she jumped in the water. Her mission was to distract me and that's what she did. I took oodles of pictures of her swimming gracefully, as the Artist laughed because she was leading me away from her nest. What a good Momma!

However, she also, purposefully, I'm sure, led me straight into the path of Poppa Goose. I heard a large swooping noise and a small splash as he landed in the water.
But what he did next caught me completely off guard. He hissed at me! Loud, threatening hisses and he kept coming towards me. The Artist explained later, that the goose was trying to say, 'Eat me, not the eggs', but all he really did was scare the dickens out of me.

He sounded like a snake hissing intently at me and he reared his head just like a snake. And I'm sure that my Stalker aka Mom,  finds this all very funny; I, however, do not. I do not like snakes, I can not look at a picture of a snake. End of story. Good thing there aren't any snakes in the country. If you say it, it's true. Right?

So what did I do as this hissing goose jumped up on the bank and kept walking towards me?
I ran the other way as fast as I could, stopping and turning for one last pic of him and the egg in the nest, there to the left. And then Momma came back and they both started honking at me so loudly, I felt like I had just tripped someones car alarm. So let that be a lesson to you. My apologies Momma and Poppa Goose, I did not mean to disrupt your evening. I promise to keep my distance in the future. Next time, I'll just bring my binoculars.

I've really enjoyed you sharing your goose experience! There are a nesting pair near where I live. Poor souls make their annual nest in a pond which is actually sewage runoff. But alas, every Spring that I've lived here, a large family emerges and spend a good part of the summer living in the heart of Brampton. And no, I doubt there are any snakes living in the Country!!!!!

LOL welcome to the country Andrea! And NO...you don't have any snakes in Ontario...they're all here in Kansas ;) My hubby is terrified (was terrified) of snakes before we moved to the country. He even asked the former farm owner if he'd seen any snakes around the farm and the fellow said he'd seen maybe 5 or 6...HA! I think at last count hubby has seen over 50 in the nearly 2 years we've been here. Now that we've taken down buildings and cleaned up debris and log piles and mowed all the long grass we've hardly seen any snakes. So...you don't have to worry ;) As for your goose story...I wish you had video of that LOL! I hope you have a wonderful Friday....

I'm with ya on the running from the geese thing (snakes too)... in my experience, geese can be sooo mean. When my kids were little we'd go to the lake to feed the ducks and those geese were pushy, would chase you and would bite! They should only be enjoyed with the use of binoculars... or from the car!

As for snakes, we don't really have any around here except a little garden snake now and then... I guess it's too cold and rainy, one positive about our weather :)

Ok, I laughed out loud with this story!! What a moment that must have been, a bit of fear mixed in with a bit of hilarity? Mother Nature rocks. And your pics are beautiful and so perfect for your tale. Especially the one of Papa goose chasing after you. Well worth the life threatening moments perhaps? Have a wonderful weekend Andrea, and stay away from those geese!!

Love your story! We have 2 nesting right in the field behind our house.....I have not tried getting to close. There is a pond near the road by our house, many geese nest there every year and when you drive by the males will chase your car down flapping their wings and honking! About the snakes, I am right there with you! I am scared to death of them and I am not kidding! Only good snake is a dead snake, sorry but that's my moto!

Who knew there could be so much drama and excitement in the country??? ;-)

What a neat story! We had geese earlier in the spring, but they've gone. I don't think they nested here this year. There's no doubt when someone or something irritates them though!

Male geese can be very aggressive this time of year. You were smart to quickly leave.

Our gander got ahold of my husband's shirt one time when he got too close to the babies and slapped the crap out of him with his wings. He had bruises for awhile. The husband, not the goose ;)

That is one of the things I love about geese--they are such devoted parents, both mom and dad! I guarantee Daddy goose would attack if you hadn't left with his hissing.

I wouldn't want to take on a fight with those two! Great pictures!

Canadian geese are so pretty. They leave a mess, but they are pretty.

We had tons of them around our place several years ago. I jokingly used to say we needed an umbrella when we went outside. My daughter and her prom date were standing on the deck while I took pictures, and one overhead goose nailed her!

I'm also a little terrified of geese.... I was bit once as a child when feeding them at a park and never recovered. It didn't help that I worked at a canoe rental place in college and had to chase them off the docks every few hours either.

They're beautiful birds, but I'll keep my distance thank you very much.
