Roundabout Here

I've admired this barn for years but the lack of any sort of shoulder has prevented me from being able to pull over and record this fine setting for posterity. That was until Good Friday. The Artist and I were headed into town to break our male twin imposed fast of meat for Lenten by searching out a good fish and chip restaurant.

It was a beautiful day in these parts so I grabbed my camera, 'just in case' and as we passed here I sighed how I longed to get a good shot of this barn but how I could never pull over. The Artist turned around, dropped me off and I snapped away while he zipped back and forth along the road. Luckily the nearest cross road was recently upgraded with a roundabout which made turning around easy peasy. Roundabouts have become quite fashionable in these parts as various municipalities have begun to install them everywhere and I daresay that I love them. They calm traffic, eliminate dangerous left hand turns, prevent unnecessary idling which in turn reduces oil consumption and reduces emissions and they are much more pleasing to the eye than a set of traffic lights any day. Their only drawback is that many people don't understand how to use them. The trick is to yield to those who are already on, once they've passed you, hop on!

Tell me dear readers, are roundabouts popping up in your neck of the woods?

Really great photo . . . A few round-a-bouts are popping up around here (very few). I like them too although my experience with them has been limited. I/we have seen them more in the Eastern States,. Ireland and Italy utilize them all over . . . and yes, traffic flows better and safer.

What a lovely setting and a great capture of it!

We have some roundabouts in a newly developed area in the northern part of our county (although I try to avoid that part of the county... too busy and populated for me,lol!). My first experience with them was while I was visiting England. I thought they were fantastic!

Beautiful photo. We do have some roundabouts in the town closest to me. Thankfully I don't go too often... :)

Very nice photo and worth stopping for. We don't have roundabouts in California that I know of, but I have driven them in the Boston area. They are a little confusing for a newbie.

Love the pic!

And yes, our county and "large" city have jumped on the roundabout bandwagon. However, they are two lane roundabouts with both lanes going straight as well as the left going left and the right going right...make sense? Folks that have used roundabouts in other parts of the country (or world) have said these ones are a bit unusual in their design. Believe it or not we've had more accidents since the roundabouts have been installed but at least they are lower speed, less injuries.

I admit, I like the roundabouts in certain places but we have a couple that just don't work... I think mostly because of the kind of traffic there is.

But I'll keep in mind how handy they may come in if I want to get a picture!

What a beautiful barn and homestead. So picturesque. Yes we have had those roundabouts popping up here in our neck of the woods and no one here knows how to use them.

Oh my goodness, that photo! AMAZING!

And yes, we have some roundabouts in the newer areas of town. I have to admit, it's a little confusing for me! HA!

We were used to the roundabout in St. Jacobs ON and then several started popping up in new areas of our neighbourhood. I agree that they are easy, if the driver understands how to use them, which is not always the case.

Beautiful scene and reflections in the water.

That is just beautiful. Perfect, even. I pass so many photo ops because there is no place to put the car. (I'm one who has to stop and think about what to do when I get to a roundabout)

We have one roundabout here - new in the last year. I hear lots of complaints about it, but I like it.

That is a nice photo and well worth the effort put in to getting the shot ;) Sometimes I'd just have to take multiple photos from the car till I got the photo that I wanted :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

LOVE the photo. And yes, roundabouts are popping up here as well. Although it drives me crazy when people don't know how to use them, or single their turns. :)

Sometimes there's nothing for it except to get out on foot! Lovely place, classic really. Yes, roundabouts are showing up here (Seattle area) more frequently these days...

Wonderful barnyard photo! I'm glad you finally found a way to photograph it. Yes, even here in Fairbanks, Alaska, we have some roundabouts showing up and more being proposed. I'm not sure they're such a great idea when the roads are icy during our long winter months though.

Are roundabouts really uncommon in the states? We have loads over here, so I'd always assumed that everywhere else had them too. I love a good roundabout :P Great photo by the way.
