In the bee yard

I received a phone call from my bee mentor Saturday. He'd been out to his bee yards, completing some hive inspections and it seemed one of the two hive splits he graciously gave me this spring is in full honey making mode. I went out yesterday to add a shallow super to the hive with hopes I may have a little honey come fall. It was nice having a chance to visit with my hard working friends; they always show me a good time....or my nostrils anyways. Nothing smells finer than bees hard at work making honey.

This is one of four yards Bill has on the go; this one being the most secluded. It's on the edge of a farmers field that is surrounded by a ring of large trees. The trees create a sort of zone for the bees, and when new queens mate in the spring, they're more likely to mate with drones from another colony in the yard, which in turn leads to a level of selective breeding for Bill's stock.

I think it's just darn pretty, and the bees, well they told me they having a wonderful time at summer 'bee' camp and while they're too busy to write home, they'll try to make it up to me this fall. I think I can live with that.

I have to show my husband this. He's wanting bees but we had to put it off this year because of the barn.

I love bees. We let a keeper keep two hives on our property and they have brought me so much entertainment. Plus I enjoy the honey. Your hives look grand.

Oh Andrea how exciting your photos are amazing. I imagine the smell and someday I would love to go see the inner workings of a hive it has always fascinated me. I am so happy for you. Hug B

I love the look of this bee yard with the colorful hive boxes. Beekeeping is such a challenge, but I love it! Nothing like the smell of bees at work.

Wow! You have a lot of hives! We had one split this summer, but we didn't have enough boxes, so we couldn't keep it.
