Return to Cranford

I received this in the mail today.

Catalogues are the greatest invention for country folk, don't you think?

I adore Dame Judy. I think she's pretty cool and I love watching her in period work.

It took me a few minutes, but eventually it sunk in, the reason she was on the cover.

Then I started to jump up and down with excitement.

Cranford

Have you ever seen this BBC mini series?
If you like period films, especially set in England, you'll like this.

I do and I'm particularly fond of anything that dates to the time the old farmhouse was built.
This series takes place in the 1840's, only slightly predating the farmhouse.

It was written by Elizabeth Gaskell. I was unfamiliar with her work but she kept company with the likes of Charles Dickens, Harriet Beecher-Stowe and Charlotte Bronte, whose biography she wrote.

She was somewhat prolific and well known in her time, and I'm fancying a read of one her novels this winter.  I find her characters diverse and authentic and the series provides a seemingly realistic glimpse into life in an 1840's village.

Meanwhile, I'm rejoicing in the news carried in with today's mail. There does indeed exist, a second shorter series, Return to Cranford.

Did you catch that? I'm starting to talk like them. I am so hooked.

Return indeed, apparently it's a Christmas special. Christmas in the 1840's. A little inspiration for next Christmas around the old farmhouse.

I love BBC programming.

Do you have any favourite BBC series or mini-series?

Be well friends!

I did indeed sit down Sunday night to watch Cranford. I so enjoy watching Dame Judy Dench. Many years ago Masterpiece Theater offered "Lilly Langtree", which had many episodes (12)? Lilly remains my all time favorite. Just this past year I found it on Net Flex and enjoyed watching it all over again, only this time around I enjoyed it with my DH.

We are temporarily receiving "American" BBC on our dish. However, for budget purposes I'm reducing our channels again in February and after then, sadly, no BBC. Till then, I will see if I can find any of these programs on our BBC and dvr them. Cranford sounds splendid, my dear :) Our son loves "Top Gear" - I must say those "chaps" are a hoot! -Tammy

Andrea, Just found your blog via Tales from the Coop Keeper and saw Cranford... Oh, I love this series! I convinced my husband to watch it - he thought it was just a chick flick, but the humor and characters hooked him, too! Didn't know there was a new series "Return to Cranford". I'll be looking to watch this one!

I love her too. I don't watch mini-series often, but that looks like a good one. My friend got a copy of the Thornbirds for Christmas and I will probably sit down and watch that with her.

This looks familiar... I think I may have accidentally stumbled upon it on our TV a week or so ago? I woke up in the middle of the night, snoozing on the couch, and it was on. But I turned off the TV and went to bed... Dang, I'll have to watch for it now!
