A funny thing happened...

I've been wanting to share something with you for a while now. Far be it from me to keep any secrets around here. Way back, perhaps a bit less than a fortnight ago, between watching chicks hatch and buying trees we headed out to a local poultry swap. We left Eli in charge of the newborns. He seemed to think that should include leaving him the keys to the new lawn tractor. I told him when he starts laying eggs, I'll gladly let him go for a joyride.

We attended the swap last year, while the Rural Roost was still in the planning stages, and I can fully attest, that it is much more enjoyable when the possibility exists for you to bring something home rather than just window shopping and merely dreaming of having chickens, someday.
The offerings this year were much broader, with turkey poults available (that was tempting!), quail, exotic game hens and ducks.
Baby ducks are the cutest. Don't even argue me on that one.
The male twin was sorely tempted by the rabbits. I told him if he can build a hutch he can have a rabbit. If I could build a rocket, I could go to the moon too. Are you with me here?

Funny thing about these auctions though. Dang if I can tell what the auctioneer is saying. I've come to the conclusion that he really isn't saying anything at all. It's just a lot of mumbo jumbo to confuse people and convince them they've just agreed to buy a gigantic gander that is louder than the entire crowd, animals and humans combined which, thank goodness, wasn't me. So when I may have nodded to indicate my desire to make a bid, and then having reached my spending limit, shook my head no, as in, I'm no longer interested, imagine my surprise when the auctioneer pointed directly at me and yelled out, in a perfectly clear voice I might add, "Sold for $12.50 to your son!" Seems the entire time I was shaking my head no, a little head to my left continued to bob up and down, saying yes, yes!
And that my friends is how you come home with five Barred Plymouth Rock chicks.

We also came home with a dozen New Hampshire eggs but I take full accountability for those.

~Be well friends!~

I just love your posts! Fun, informative, creative, so, so, so enjoyable. BUT . . . the photo of the baby ducks is the BEST part of today . . . adorable . . . !

That's too funny! I'm still in the dreaming stages when it comes to chickens, but one day I will have some. :-)

Ha, leave it to the kiddos!

Although I'm just as bad, OK, probably worse, I admit it.

Yes, baby ducks are too cute. I went to the feed store four months ago to get some feed for the chicks and there were baby ducks in a rubber tote sitting on the counter. (So that people like me would see them and just have to have them.) I called my hubby and bless his heart he said whatever you'd like to do Babe (knowing full well that I'd come home with a few ducks!).

Well, I'm SO bad, that I came home with ALL the baby ducks. Not just a few, sigh...

Needless to say, I am now in the process of digging a small pond for the ducks who are no longer babies!

I do love them though and am waiting for them to start laying eggs. They're supposed to be good egg layers and duck eggs are said to have more protein and are richer in flavor. We'll see! (I may even try my hand at hatching a few)

Great post!

Re'freshing notes from the country. You could put together short stories into a book. Think about it.

So funny! It would have been great to be the auctioneer and to see both of your faces during the bidding! -Mary

OH, that's hysterical :) :) I can't stop laughing ;) :) I'm thinking it'll turn out to be a blessing in disguise ;) :) One of my friend's has a farm in Vermont. She'd ordered some guineau and turkey chicks...and thought she'd cancelled the order...but realized that hadn't happened, when the box with the chirping cherubs arrived at her farm. She kept them and it's been really a blessing...not to mention all the funny stories as a result :)

Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather ;) :) :)

Sounds like you had fun. Auctions are always a good time. You gotta watch those hands though. No arguments on how cute ducks are from me. They get to me every time I see one. So far I have been able to resist bringing any home.

So funny! Have to leave that little bidder at home next time although he does have good taste. Beautiful chicks.

That's funny. I'm a sucker for animal pictures. The little quackers are cute but I'm a bunny fan. I like those plymouth rock chicks. It could be worst....My daughter in her early twenties goes with me to my annual sorority lunch that has silent and live auctions.... well she's cost me at least $100 each year plus whatever I've bought. Your winnigs are cutier than mine. LOL

Gotta love that kid :)
He can come here and build a rabbit hutch anytime :) And he won't have to go to school, or have a bedtime...
